Episode 209 is a great episode of the Planet Money Podcast. Along with that is a link to a Budget simulator. The goal is to get the deficit to 60% of GDP by 2018. I got it to 47% while getting in most of the things I care about, without going crazy. Every voter should play with this because it at least adds perspective to the difficulty of balancing the budget. It does ignore political realities that common sense or even the will of the people is not enough to inspire action with the congress we have, let alone with the congress we are likely to get next.
